"Aww! Come on! You're always taking things the wrong way!"
"You called me a 'spineless, toe-sucking, sack of detritus'" said the visibly shaken CPA Munch had dragged in for molesting a little boy.
"I meant that in the best way possible,"
"You told me to 'prepare to be someones bitch,'"
"What I meant was, you are obviously a very handsome man and that you would probably be very popular in jail."
"I think I need a lawyer."
"Now why would you want to go and do a thing like that?" Despite there being two other perfectly good seats on the other side of the table, Munch took the one next to Cartwright. He pulled the chair in closer than social mores would typically allow and leaned in, "Listen Jimmy-can I call you Jimmy?"
"It's James and no,"
"Listen Jimmy, we're just having fun here. It's just you and me talking, nothing else. You call a lawyer in and that's going to ruin everything. They're going to come in here and tell you to keep your mouth shut and then we'll never get hear your side of the story."
"I'm not stupid, Detective,"
"Never said you were"
"I'm not some strung out junkie you found on the side of the road," Cartwright was a train wreck. His handkerchief was soaked from wiping sweat from his forehead and his metal chair was tapping a steady rhythm on the floor as he nervously tapped his foot. He lit up his 5th cigarette in a row before continuing, "I won't let you make me your fall guy. You've got the wrong man."
The words came out in a sea of nerves which only cemented in Munch's mind that this was his man. He'd been slowly wearing him down for hours and it had become incredibly obvious that the "bad cop" routine wasn't going to work and by the looks of it, it was too late to try and be his friend. It was time for plan B.
Munch got up and went to the door of the room, "Hey Elliot! You wanna come in here and give me a hand?".
Maybe Cartwright would be more inclined to talk when Elliot had him sucking linoleum.
